A Letter from a Supporter

Hello,

I am sending this e-mail to my friends and neighbors. Please read and give Prop 405 serious consideration. If you do not live in the Vail School District, you can disregard or please pass onto someone you know who does.

You have seen the pamphlets and the solicitations for Prop 405. I won’t bore you with statistics or inundate you with facts that you can find throughout the Vail Community. I want to share my personal perspective, as a parent as to why a “YES” vote is necessary.

You know my son, Andrew. He is a bright individual who enjoys life. He is also a young man who LOVES school. Andrew has had the privilege of attending Vail School District since he was in first grade. I have compared his education to that of a private school. He has been blessed with MANY awesome teachers. Each teacher has made him feel SPECIAL. They have enriched and challenged him. The teachers and staff treat each student as an individual. I have seen teachers give up family time so they can bring elementary kids together for a reading night or forego sleep so they can take their students on that special field trip or even in high school give up countless hours so the students can take part in a special program, Robotics, after school. The teachers relentlessly give of themselves for their students. They participate in spelling bees, student stores, science fairs, and other events to benefit their students. Andrew has been honored to be part of community school efforts, leadership teams and reading programs because of the tireless effort put forth by Vail teachers and staff. Vail is a school district where memories are made through learning and education. It is an environment where respect is commonplace and bullying is not accepted. It is a safe haven where students are free to learn and grow. Andrew sums it up as “an engaging environment where you want to go to school and are not afraid to attend.” He has friends who have left the district and now miss the high standards of Vail.

With the economy how much longer can we, the community, expect Vail to work on a shoestring budget. There are only so many ways a dollar can be divided. I have seen that Vail has reduced waste. VAHS is a green school where communication is through the internet and email. Andrew has brought home many a worksheet that was reused with printing on the other side. Students are taught to respect their school and the materials. Parents donate supplies. Nothing is wasted! Parents and the community are integral to Vail’s success. Everyone pulls together. Now I ask will you?

I realize that each of us face difficult economic challenges, but a yes vote is not only good for Vail Schools, but the community. We love Colorado but have chosen to stay in Arizona for Andrew’s education. We chose Vail for its excelling schools that continues in this economy. Vail always makes the right curriculum choices for its students. We chose Vail because it was the right choice. Ten years later we know we made the right choice. Will you?

A “Yes” vote is also good for you, the property owner. Good schools attract buyers. That is why we are here. What about you?

Finally, words I read on a recent Prop 405 site: “For 17 years, our district has flourished on the tax contributions of the community it serves. Please know that no amount of belt tightening and waste reduction will make up for what we will lose by not passing Prop 405. This is simply a vote for renewal, not an additional tax.”

Vail Unified School District is not only a place where kids go to school, but a place where communities gather. Please VOTE YES and allow Vail the privilege to lead the next generation. If you have any questions, let me know. I will find the answers. Pass this onto your friends and neighbors. We need your vote!

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Mary Mullen

AS STRONG FISCAL CONSERVATIVES WE WHOLEHEARTEDLY SUPPORT VOTING YES ON PROPOSITION 405

STRONG SCHOOLS = STRONG COMMUNITIES
“Proposition 405 will simply continue the supplement first approved by Vail voters 17 years ago. To spend anything less today sends a vote of ‘no confidence’ to the students and puts their futures at risk.”

State Senator Frank Antenori and Representative Ted Vogt offer endorsements and support of Vail and Prop 405

As strong fiscal conservatives we wholeheartedly support voting YES on proposition 405. Simply put, it’s a wise investment that has returned solid dividends to our community for over 17 years. Here are some examples: Four consecutive years ALL of Vail’s schools have received an Excelling certification; the largest district in Arizona able to make that claim. Because of this performance, property values in the Vail School District are more stable than in other areas of Pima County. Vail has received numerous state and national awards for innovative approaches to education. Vail achieves more with less; $800 less per student than the average Arizona school district. Vail has done its financial part – trimming $8.4 million from its budget in the last two years. Our colleagues in the Arizona Legislature, as well as numerous constituents, consistently remind us that Vail is a district where public education is done right. Government must always strive to be responsible stewards of your hard earned tax dollars. The Vail School District has done just that; earning our trust and our vote. We respectfully ask you join us in continuing the investment in Vail schools by voting YES on Proposition 405. Signed, Frank Antenori Ted Vogt Arizona State Senator Arizona State Representative (R) – LD30 (R) – LD30

Vail School District Override Facts

Written September 21st, 2011
Categories: Community, Prop 405

Override – Basic Facts

  • The Vail School District Governing Board has called for a 10% override election (Proposition 405) to be held in November 2011.
  • An override is an authorization from local voters to use property taxes to provide additional funding for their specific school district. The funds are not a loan or for building facilities. 100% of additional funding stays within the local school district.
  • For the past 17 years the Vail School District has operated on a voter-approved 10% override. Last year, a 15% override failed by 99 votes. Based on community feedback the Vail Governing Board decided to ask for a renewal of the 10% this year.
  • Override funding will be used for the following:
Continue programs that have successfully increased student achievement
      Restrict growth of class sizes
Restore and continue programs for academically advanced and gifted students
Preserve art, music, and physical education classes
  • Budget and Tax Facts

    • $8.4 million: The amount in the last two years that has been cut from the Vail budget (even with the benefit of Prop 100). An average of 5 students have been added to each classroom; over 40 teaching positions have been eliminated; programs have been cut, and compensation for teachers and administrators has been decreased.
    • $5.42: The amount per month a successful override will reinstate in property taxes for the average homeowner in Vail. The average assessed value of a home in Vail is $169,960. $5.42 represents the monthly tax amount saved by the average home as a result of the override loss last November.
    • If the override is defeated this November, property taxes for the average home-owner in Vail will decrease about $5.42 per month for each of the next two years.
    • Vail’s per pupil expenditure is $794 per student less than the AVERAGE in Arizona. Arizona’s average per pupil expenditure is ranked 49th in the nation.
    • Vail’s administrative costs are the lowest of any district in Pima County and half the national average ($525 per student in Vail versus $1,050 per student nationally).

    District Performance Facts

    • Recipient of 2011 Arizona Department of Education Excellence Award
    • All eligible schools are A+ schools.
    • All regular Vail schools have labeled “excelling” by the state of Arizona 4 consecutive years – the largest district in Arizona to make that claim.

Vail USD secondary taxes decrease again (for the 13th consecutive year)

Written September 21st, 2011
Categories: Community, Prop 405

The Combined Property Tax Rate in the Vail School District is decreasing for the 13th consecutive year despite the fact that real and assessed home values have fallen. The rates have not been this low since the 1993-1994 school year.

Local realtor Rebecca Schulte stated, “In my 21 years of real estate experience, I have learned that the schools make or break an area and the value of homes! The quality of the schools in Vail has most definitely affected Vail property values in a positive way. In our current economic struggles, the quality schools are the reason Vail’s assessed property values have only dropped by an average of 10% compared to the state average drop of 19% over the last year. Further, VSD is the draw to the community for prospective home buyers and even renters.”
